How to choose an NVMe SSD: PCIe, M.2, capacity, and temperature

Read the M.2 slot specifications

M.2 mainly describes the form factor and connector. To use NVMe, the slot must provide compatible PCIe communication. Check the manual for generation, lane count, supported sizes, and whether the slot shares resources with SATA ports or other expansion slots.

Laptops may accept components on only one side, limit capacity, or require a specific thermal part. In desktops, slot position can place the SSD close to the graphics card and change its thermal conditions.

PCIe 3.0, 4.0, or 5.0

Each PCIe generation increases potential bandwidth, but results also depend on the SSD controller, lane count, and file type. Maximum sequential figures do not represent every task.

Many combinations support cross-generation operation at the speed of the limiting component. Confirm manufacturer documentation, especially on platforms that divide lanes between slots.

Capacity, endurance, and workload

Choose enough capacity for the operating system, applications, games, and expected growth. Manufacturers may publish endurance metrics such as TBW alongside warranty information, helping compare drives designed for similar workloads.

Users working with large files, editing, or continuous transfers should evaluate sustained performance rather than short peaks. For gaming and general use, loading, capacity, and consistency are more useful together than one isolated figure.

Thermal management and installation

High temperatures can cause a controller to reduce performance temporarily for protection. Good airflow and a compatible heatsink can help during sustained workloads, but not every configuration needs the same solution.

Do not stack heatsinks or remove labels without checking warranty guidance. Insert the drive without forcing the connector, secure it at the position matching its length, and verify that thermal material contacts the correct area.

Does a PCIe 4.0 SSD work on a PCIe 3.0 motherboard?+

Many combinations are backward compatible and operate at the available generation, but support from the slot, BIOS, and manufacturers must be confirmed.

What does M.2 2280 mean?+

The number describes approximate dimensions: 22 mm wide and 80 mm long. The motherboard or laptop must support that size.

Does every NVMe SSD need a heatsink?+

Not necessarily. The need depends on the model, position, airflow, and workload. Follow the SSD and motherboard manufacturers' recommendations.
